A Space to Create
Carving out a Crafty Space in Your Home - Get Creative!
Having a pretty and functional space to craft, sew and create is essential for me.
Years ago when my boys were little, the dining room table was sufficient. However, since my love of crafting has grown...so has my need for a space that I can call my own.
Here in TN I've utilized a wall and a corner of our bonus room.
It's not exactly ideal because it's party-central when we have people over...so I have to keep it tidy pretty much all the time. It also means I can't spread out and my wall space is limited to just the one wall.
But, beggars can't be choosers...and this has been working out pretty well!
Let me show you more pictures.
I have a desk and a small sewing table. The sewing table and chair were found at Goodwill several years ago for less than $20 and I haven't changed a thing about them.
I took an old drawer from a dresser and flipped it on its side. Mr. Diy attached it to the wall and it makes a great spot to store my thread.
Here's a look from the side. My old army commander's desk (an Ebay find) is hardworking with lots of cubbies and dividers inside the drawers. The armoire is used for paper storage as well as fabrics, and the picnic baskets hold ribbon. I have plans to paint the armoire someday soon. The long shelf along the wall was created with a board, a piece of trim and stain. Black brackets hold it up. Mr. Diy cut it to size to fit perfectly in this space.
I utilize jars and baskets to hold all kinds of crafting supplies. Vintage and new kitchen accessories (like the lazy susans and the old tool caddy) help me stay organized. I really need to have most of my things within reach and either labeled or visual. If it's out of sight, it's out of mind. I have been known to purchase something I already had...because I didn't see it and forget I already had it!
This corner holds empty albums and in the drawers of the white cabinet are small cutting tools. My paint supplies are stored in the large baskets to the far left. I know some people who organize by color but keeping like things together is what works for me.
Having a pretty chandelier for lighting, and keeping things organized and neat means it's a place I like to hang out and create in. When it gets too messy I'm less likely to work there. I do have another bookshelf to the far right with all my Cricut supplies as well as acrylic paints but somehow I forgot to take a picture of that spot (it fits in a tiny alcove opposite the stairs).
I have had a whole room to myself before for crafting, and someday hope to again. But for now, this little corner in my bonus room is proof that you can carve out space pretty much anywhere in your home and make it look beautiful and inviting. Being creative with your storage doesn't have to be expensive. Many of my baskets and jars are from the Dollar Store, thrift stores, Target sales, etc. Know your measurements and keep an eye out for sales.
Thanks for letting me share my Crafty Space with you today!

DeleteLove it! I understand working with a small work space, I live with 3 room mates in a two bedroom apartment. My 'mates are sweet enough to let me have half the living room though! I am working on reorganizing it to make it easier for me to access and use all my supplies now and I am so glad I found these tips! :) Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteThanks RaChil, so glad these tips were helpful as you organize your little space ;) Good luck!

Thanks Jann; I agree. It may not be big or a whole room or my ideal...but it's MY space. I've made it cute and functional and it makes me smile to sit there and work! That's all a girl really needs, right?!
