Make a Burlap Heart for Your Door
The curse of creative people is that sometimes an idea will pop into our heads and we cannot be satisfied until we have made whatever it is that we're obsessing about!
Such is the case with this burlap heart door hanger. I love working with burlap and have enjoyed creating things for my door, like my fall door hanger and my burlap snow people door hangers, all using burlap as the base.
I already had a Valentines wreath for my door...but with the cold weather we've been having, I've been afraid those berries were going to crack (don't ask me how I know...there may have been a little experiment at Christmas)...and I decided to bring it inside and hang it on my white hutch.

So...while I was shopping at Walmart last weekend, I got the brainwave to make a big burlap heart for my door using the same method as my other burlap door hangers. In my mind I saw red and white chevron as the fabric for the front...
...and my plans would not be altered...not even when I marched up and down the fabric aisles three times and spotted nary a single chevron print...
However, I did find a red fabric remnant. Yes, a piece of solid red fabric for .79 cents and I decided to paint a chevron pattern on it. I was bound and determined to have a chevron patterned heart!
Now, if you have better things to do with your Saturday like watch your kids play basketball
or go to the movies or clean your house or dust cobwebs from the corners....this may not be
the project for you! Just sayin!
As it was, I had the afternoon free and so I spent a better part of it on this project....
I started by cutting out my burlap hearts (you need 2) and one red heart, slightly smaller. To get perfect hearts, fold your fabric in half and cut out half a heart. When you open it up, both sides are equal.
I made my chevron pattern, taped it to my red fabric and painted it on using white acrylic paint.
I used this tutorial to make my pattern. I used contact paper for my template...and of course it's sticky so that helped. I will not lie to you...it took awhile to do! Much easier to have just driven the extra 8 miles to Hobby Lobby for the real chevron fabric. However, I was into this project now, there was no going back...
Because I'm lazy, I only cut one strip of chevron and then cut that in half and proceeded to paint a section, lift it up and move it, paint another and so on. I think that might be why I don't have nice, crisp lines. Yup, the OCD in me was having a bit of a fit when I lifted up the tape and saw this mess...
I hung it up to dry, not sure if it was even salvageable. Meaning, it was yet to be determined if the perfectionist in me could overlook the imperfection of it and choose to use it anyway...or start over. Do you like the drying system I rigged up, lol?!
Once dry, I decided to outline the white paint in Sharpie and it made a big difference in making the edges look more crisp and neat. I love when extra work is skillfully averted, lol!
The next step was sewing the chevron printed fabric to one of the burlap hearts using a wide zigzag stitch on my sewing machine.
Now it was time to hot glue the two burlap hearts together. I left an opening at the top to stuff the heart with...plastic grocery sacks! Really! And then finished gluing it shut.
I added a few details on the front before adding my hanging wire.
This is the wire I like...It's made by Artistic Wire and is a nice, heavy gauge for hanging, while still being malleable enough to twist the ends for cute coils.
It is a fun addition to my Valentines door and is different from other burlap heart door hangers that I've seen. Plus, it's handmade so that makes it extra special, right? Even if it's not perfect!
And that's how I spent my Saturday afternoon.
My tip for the day...use real chevron fabric and save yourself a ton of time!
I would love to know that I'm not the only one who has spent inordinate amounts of time on a single project....that could have been done in less than half the time! Please share your story so we can giggle together at our foolishness and know we are not alone in this 'crafty impatience' club!
