Decorating with Plaid
Happy Friday friends! It's no secret that plaid is where it's at this year! Just look around you when you're out shopping. And in case you missed it, I shared some wonderful ideas for gifts in the Ultimate Frugal Shopper's Guide to Plaid a week or so ago.
Today, I thought I'd bring it full circle and show you how I'm using plaid in my own home. Maybe some of these ideas will be new to you and inspire you to add a little plaid to your home.
And when you think 'plaid', let me remind you that doesn't just refer to flannel shirts! Buffalo check, hounds-tooth, tartan, windowpane, madras and gingham all fall under the plaid umbrella. So look around your home - you might have more plaid that you realized!

A plaid throw on a chair is an invitation to cozy up and stay awhile, especially when it's fleece!
It can also add a bright pop of color to neutral furniture. This plaid 'throw' is actually a wrap scarf I spotted at Target. The colors are perfect for my home, and I love that when I tire of it on my sofa, I can wear it! How's that for budget decorating?? I think I should win a prize or something for that stroke of brilliance!
A couple years ago I purchased these flannel sheets and they are wonderful for taking the chill off of cold winter nights!
I had to bring a little plaid to the guest room for the season...it's already outfitted with buffalo check pillows and curtains, but this large bolster pillow from Kohl's finishes it off. And you know what? I don't even care that the plaids don't match! It's called 'eclectic'!!!
This room is now ready for my Thanksgiving guests. Yes, I'm still holding on to my Thanksgiving decor until the day after - then it'll be Christmas decorating all.the.way!
I might be crazy, but I decided to throw a folded flannel sheet over my Thanksgiving table. It's a neutral plaid that matches my furniture and gives that rustic feel, and I think it looks pretty cute! Plus, it's washable!
Here is just a peek at my holiday mantle. I'll be sharing more of this project soon, but it involves a yard of plaid fabric.
Here is last year's holiday table. I purchased a set of plaid napkins from World Market and paired them with a length of polka dotted gift wrap as a table runner. It was a great way to add a little color and variation to my holiday table while keeping the cost at a minimum. You can read more about that project here.
And when all else fails, grab a couple flannel plaid shirts and a scarf or two and hang them on hooks!
I love the warmth that plaid brings to my home, especially during the winter months when I need some extra coziness!

If you get too hot with flannel sheets, try this trick: only use a flannel top sheet; keep the fitted sheet a cool cotton or cotton blend!
