We're gearing up for the most wonderful time of the year when the family travels to celebrate the holidays with us. Have you put some thought into creating a welcoming retreat for your holiday guests? It doesn't really matter the size of the space, you can make it welcoming and comfortable for your overnight guests and I'm sharing 5 tips to help you do just that!

5 tips to Create a Retreat for Holiday Guests

No. 1 - Provide a Comfortable Place to Sleep
When we redid our sunroom, we added a daybed. Our home, while large, only has 3 bedrooms so the sunroom functions as a guest room. A comfortable mattress, plenty of pillows and cozy blankets makes it a welcome spot to crash at the end of a long day of family fun! The beauty of a daybed is that it functions as both a sofa piled high with pillows during the day, but quickly becomes a bed when it's time for lights out! Even if you only have air mattresses on the floor, you can cozy them up with fresh-smelling sheets, plenty of warm blankets and pillows!

When prepping for guests, clean sheets are a must! I like to wash the sheets with Persil® ProClean® Power-Caps® for an unbelievably fresh smell and powerful clean! I love the fresh, long-lasting fragrance this detergent has! No one wants to lay their head on a musty-smelling pillow that's been sitting in a closet for months!

I found Persil® ProClean® Power-Caps® at Target, in the laundry detergent aisle. They offer liquid detergent as well, but I prefer the convenience of tossing a power-cap into the wash.

No. 2 - A Guest Essentials Basket or Tray
This is such a simple thing to do, but it goes a long way to showing your guests you're happy to have them! A basket or tray, filled with a few essentials like a water bottle, extra toothbrush, shampoo, and the WIFI password makes a guest feel welcome! I'm sure you can think of a few more things to add to your guest essentials! Check out this holiday guest basket I made for the bathroom last year.

Bonus tip: make a simple WIFI password card that stands on its own with just a few letter stickers and a piece of sturdy cardstock folded in half!

No. 3 - Curtains or blinds to block morning light
Sleeping in may not be an option during the holidays, but it is nice to provide your guests with the choice! Our curtains pull shut, which is really nice because the sunroom can be a very bright space with all the windows we have! Consider adding blinds or curtains to your guest rooms.

No. 4 - A dresser with a couple empty drawers
You may not have room for a dresser, but even a bookshelf with a couple of empty shelves is welcome! It's nice for holiday guests to be able to unpack their bag and put their things away. The cottage white dresser in this room normally holds craft supplies, but it's easy to empty out a few drawers.

Bonus tip: a fabric softener sheet tucked inside the drawers will add a fresh smell!

No. 5 - Fresh Towels and Extra Blankets
Having a set of towels that you use just for guests ensures they stay nice and new-looking! Set a stack of towels on the bed or dresser so your guest knows those are for their use while they're in your home! Even if the towels are clean, I like to wash them again so they smell fresh. Keep a couple extra blankets folded up in the room because some people welcome an extra blanket or two at night!

I hope you found these tips helpful as you prepare to host guests in your home this holiday season! It's so easy to put a little extra effort into ensuring your guests feel welcome and have a cozy, fresh-smelling space to call their own while they're in your home!
