Easy Tips to Add Cozy Fall Feels to the Bedroom
If you're a long-time follower, you'll remember that I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I wasn't going to go "whole hog" with Fall decorating this year! I'm keeping it simple!
Now, to be perfectly honest, it all starts with a good foundation! I've never decorated my bedroom for the seasons before because our master bedroom was always a messy dumping ground! It wasn't a room I wanted to photograph or spend much time in! That all recently changed when Mr DIY and I got serious about a bedroom makeover. You can see the before and after pics of our European farmhouse master bedroom makeover by clicking here.
Here's a quick recap of all we did to makeover our master bedroom:
- we added an easy faux brick wall that I German-schmeared and white-washed
- new paint
- I gave our old oak furniture a weathered wood paint treatment
- new bedding, lighting and a gorgeous rug
- Mr DIY built a set of rustic barn doors to replace French doors
The results speak for themselves and our master bedroom is now a calm, peaceful place to relax at the end of the day! And to think I almost, nearly painted that headboard!!
You may not have a recently remodeled bedroom, and I get it. But by simply decluttering and rethinking your furniture placement, maybe bringing in a rug you have in another room (yes, a rug over carpet is a thing!) you can create the feeling of a new space! Even switching out the artwork you have hanging about your bed can make your bedroom feel different!
Now the fun begins with adding some cozy Fall feels. I'm sharing 6 easy tips to add warmth and the coziness of Fall to your bedroom! Use these ideas to spark your imagination and help you to think about what you can do in your own space!
1. Wrap a pillow in a Fall throw or scarf
One of the projects I did when we were working on our bedroom was to DIY a very inexpensive long bolster pillow for our bed. I used old pillows to make the bolster, and bought a yard of expensive looking velvet for a cover. This no-sew project added such a punch of color and gave me that high-end look I was wanting.
To cozy it up for Fall, I used a blanket/scarf in a Fall plaid that I already had and wrapped it around the bolster! I just wrapped it right over the velvet wrap and secured the ends with rubber bands! It took me less than 5 minutes to create a completely different look!
This is the exact fall throw that I used to wrap my bolster pillow (and it's currently on sale!). You can find similar fall scarves here and lightweight fall throws here. You probably already have something you can use! Get creative!
2. Bring in neutral pillows with texture
I had three faux fur pillows in cream on our bed. I removed one of them and replaced it with a neutral pillow that has a ton of texture. Adding cozy Fall is all about the texture!
This beige roses pillow cover is the one I used (and it's half off right now!) But anything that's neutral and has texture, whether it's macrame or fringe, knitted or pom poms, is what you want to bring in. Here are some great natural pillow covers that would work well here.
3. Add a basket
Baskets have a lot of texture and they naturally have fall colors. Any rustic basket or tray will be perfect! I happened to find a rustic tray with a basket insert at Goodwill a few years ago, and this was one of my favorite finds ever! It works so well in my fall bedroom. I love any of these tray baskets to add that texture to your Fall bedroom!
You could use a large basket on the floor to hold another fall throw or pillow, or a smaller one filled with pumpkins. Use your imagination!
4. Bring in some copper
Copper is perfect for Fall! It has a wonderful patina and warmth that immediately makes a space more inviting! I found a set of copper cannisters at the thrift store last year, and they never made it to the kitchen! I use them all around my house to hold interesting things, in this case a small faux plant.
It's such an easy way to add those cozy Fall feels! You may have a set of copper mule mugs. Why not add them to your tray! If you don't own any copper pieces yet, keep a look out next time you're shopping! Target, HomeGoods, the thrift store are all places to find inexpensive copper pieces. A copper pumpkin would be perfect!
5. Add a rustic element from nature
I switched out some of the greenery in the ironstone pitcher on my nightstand for a couple stems of faux cotton. They instantly create warmth and help to add the ambiance of Fall that I was working towards.
You might want to add a bowl of dried seed pods, or decorative rattan balls or even some interesting branches from your yard. Anything earthy will work to add coziness and the feeling of Fall!
6. Add a fall-scented candle
Scents are powerful and help to invoke feelings! Even though it's currently 95° outside, it feels like Fall in my bedroom because I'm burning a yummy smelling Fall candle!
320 Sycamore Candles is one of my favorite shops for top quality, handmade soy candles that burn clean. With fall scents like Pumpkin Spice Latte, Autumn Harvest, Maple Bourbon Brioche, Caramel Pralines and Apple Cider Donuts...mmmmmmm, fall is just the flick of a lighter away 😉🍂🌰🍁
Full disclosure: Mr DIY is very sensitive to smells, so I have to enjoy my candles when he's not home! I don't mind as it encourages me to escape to my cozy bedroom for a little me time! A scented candle, warm beverage and a good book is one of my favorite ways to relax!
You may have noticed the drop cloth pumpkin that is playing a starring role in my Fall bedroom. That's a recent project and I put together a complete step by step video tutorial to show you exactly how to make your own drop cloth pumpkins! You can view the tutorial here.
