Good morning beautiful! I hope you had a fantastic week and are staying healthy and busy! Today I'm sharing something a little bit different...no DIY project today...we're talking skin care! It's always been my desire to age gracefully, and I'm sure you desire the same thing! These 5 tips are sure to help you put your best face forward!

How to achieve bright and healthy skin

I've been fortunate to look younger than my age all my life. I say fortunate now, but I clearly remember being mistaken for a high school kid when I was a college grad, and feeling super annoyed 😀 I also remember as a new mom in my mid-20's, being mistaken for a high school kid! It made me so angry then, but it makes me laugh now, because I WISH THIS WAS STILL THE CASE, haha! I've definitely had some wrinkles and age spots start creeping up on me in the last few years.

I have often been asked what my secret is to looking young. And I wish I knew the answer to that...the best I can say is 'clean living'! Or as my dad used to joke, "I don't drink, I don't chew, I don't go with girls that do".

But I know that's not super helpful, and while I don't have a magic elixir for looking young forever, I do have some tips to help us all achieve bright and healthy skin, no matter our age!

TIP #1 - Stay Hydrated

This one is so obvious, but it's also so true! I have friends who literally drink nothing all day but coffee or diet soda! Luckily I happen to enjoy water and find it refreshing, so it's easy for me to stay hydrated. If you struggle with getting enough water, try making a big pitcher of spa water. Slice some lemons, oranges and cucumber and add it to a pitcher of water. It adds a delicious taste! You could even add some raspberries for a berry flavor! Our skin needs water to look good! It's an essential!

TIP #2 - Eat Clean

Trust me, I know how hard it is to ditch junk food! As someone who has been an emotional eater my entire life, this is something I've struggled with...a lot! About a year ago I cut out sugar, gluten, caffeine and most junk food (I say 'most' because it would be too depressing to face a life without the occasional splurge of chocolate, cookies, chips and pizza!)

I really try to focus on getting lots of fresh, seasonal veggies and fruit in my diet...organic if possible. I've also recently started buying organic meat as I've been experiencing some health issues and toxic overload. I have started reading labels, juicing at home, making my own granola bars and staying away from microwave popcorn! I also said goodbye to the Cherry Coke Zero that I had a serious love affair with for decades! It was hard. Giving up caffeine was really hard, and I had a headache for 2 weeks!

But the benefits have been incredible! I have more energy, and a clearer head. No more sugar crashes or 3:00 slumps. My appetite has stabilized and cravings are pretty much gone! I rarely get blemishes anymore, even during PMS. I still treat myself every now and then but it's not a daily thing like it's been in the past!

I'm still waiting for my metabolism to pick up and to start losing some weight. I'm at that tricky age just before menopause, when the hormones can become imbalanced and it's like you're inhabiting a different body. But I'm staying positive and continuing to eat well because it affects everything, even your skin!

TIP #3 - Get Moving

Notice I didn't say "Get insane amounts of exercise"! I happen to be a couch potato who would much rather curl up all day with a good book or movie marathon than get sweaty at the gym! All the reading that I've done recently supports movement as more beneficial than too much intense exercise, especially if you struggle with hormone issues (like adrenal fatigue), or metabolism issues like I do.

Challenge yourself to walk more. There are lots of YouTube walking program videos, and these are what I rely on the majority of the time during the summer as it's already blazing hot and humid outside! I try to get out for a walk around the block with Millie at least 3 times a week, but the rest of the time I'm inside with the cold air blasting!

TIP #4 - Use Clean Products

I mentioned toxic burden above, and it's a real thing! The sheer number of chemicals in literally everything we use for our homes, our clothes and our skin is crazy! Our bodies are designed to flush out the bad stuff, but sometimes there's just too much and it struggles!

I've been making a concerted effort to transition to clean products around our home and even what I put on my skin. I bought glass storage containers to replace the plastic. I've ditched my perfumes and body sprays, opting to go au natural. I've switched to natural deodorant and hair care products that contain no parabens or sulphates.

Derma E Skincare

So when I got the opportunity to try out Derma E's line of Vitamic C skincare, I jumped onboard! These products are clean (which means they're good for you and free of the bad stuff!) They are non-GMO, 100% Vegan, Cruelty Free, Gluten Free and Soy Free. We all know how good Vitamin C is for us (think fresh-squeezed OJ), and it's true for our skin too! Here's what the Derma E blog says about Vitamin C and our skin.

One of the main reasons why Vitamin C is important for skin is that it may support collagen production. Collagen is crucial for vibrant, youthful-looking skin. It is a protein that keeps your skin feeling firm, smooth and supple. As we age, collagen production decreases, which is where Vitamin C for the skin comes in, as it is known to help boost collagen and fight the signs of aging.

Vitamin C is also powerful because it is an antioxidant. That means it can help protect the skin from the damage that can be caused when it is exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays or environmental pollutants. That damage can take the form of fine lines, uneven tone, or a rough texture to the skin. Vitamin C may also be beneficial when it comes to retaining moisture in the skin, which is another anti-aging bonus—when skin is well-hydrated, it is plumper and firmer, and therefore less likely to show wrinkles or flakiness. The potency of Vitamin C for skin cannot be denied—it has the ability to transform the appearance of your complexion so it looks brighter, fresher and renewed.

fresh squeeze orange juice
And YES, this is fresh squeezed orange juice that I made in my juicer! This is the exact one I bought, and I love that it's small and so easy to clean! It does the job quickly and quietly!

Just like with any skincare products, using multiple products from the same line has a cumulative effect (meaning each product builds on the next). This is the most effective way to gain the benefits. Here's a quick run down of the products I'm using and what I love about each one.

Derma E Vitamin C skincare

Vitamic C Daily Brightening Cleanser

This product takes away all my makeup and makes my skin feel fresh and clean! It's easy to pump a small amount out and it smells really good. I feel like it melts away my makeup (mind you, I don't wear a lot but still it does a great job!)

Vitamin C Concentrated Serum

I think this might be my favorite product of the bunch! It is lightweight and fast absorbing, My skin just feels better after using it! Because I have quite oily skin, I find I'm using this as a moisturizer both day and night. It delivers the right amount of moisture without being overpowering.

Vitamin C Perfecting Eye Cream

I was especially excited to try the Perfecting Eye Cream, which contains turmeric and caffeine to help minimize under eye dark spots and circles, fine lines and puffiness. My daughter helped me shoot a short video that shows how to apply this product, and I apologize that the orientation is the wrong way! It's been awhile since I shared a video (hides head in shame) and we just forgot! We did have lots of fun though, and my nearly-16-year-old-dd was a huge help with both the video and the pictures in this post. So thanks Abby, love ya! 💗

Vitamin C Intense Night Cream

I got these products just after returning home from our trip to Yellowstone, and I had a mild sunburn with some peeling. I hate when my nose peels, don't you? You just want to pick at it all day long! Well I used this night cream and within 2 days the peeling was gone! I was super impressed because normally I can peel for a week or more! My skin felt dewy and super hydrated. Like I said above, I'm not using this on a nightly basis during the summer because it's so humid and hot that my skin just doesn't really need it! But as soon as cooler weather arrives, I can't wait to slather this on at night and keep those dry patches at bay!

Microdermabrasion Scrub

Ever wish you had the money to go to the dermatologist and get a specialized treatment for your skin to help with acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles? Well this product is a salon treatment in a jar! The gentle exfoliating scrub combines Dead Sea Salt and a fine-textured crystal blend that buffs away dullness and smooths the look of fine lines, wrinkles, roughness and acne scars. The end result is brighter, healthier, more youthful skin!

I love that these products are affordable and that they really do work! With consistent use, you will notice a more luminescent quality in your skin. And don't we all want that?

TIP #5 - Get Enough Sleep

This one is a no-brainer, but it's so important! I don't know if personality correlates with sleep, but I find that I (the introvert) have no trouble getting my 7-9 hours a night! Mr DIY (the extrovert) gets much less, but he also seems to require less. Hmm, interesting right?

We all know that we should stay away from our screens before bed, but that's not always easy...especially if you like to fall asleep to music. But I have found that a warm bath with Epsom salts and essentials oils really helps to relax me (to the point I've nearly fallen asleep in the tub a few times!). You know your body and you know what's best for you. Bottom line, you'll feel better and your skin will look better when you get enough good quality sleep!

I hope you've found these tips helpful on your journey to brighter and healthier skin! If you have specific skin issues, make sure to check out the Derma E blog; they have lots of helpful information and maybe another product line would be better for your skin!

There are lots of other ways to ensure your skin stays healthy, do you have a favorite tip or beauty secret that's working for you to share with us?
