Long ago, in a land far far away...

I was the brand new mom of a newborn baby boy. And I started scrapbooking to record all those firsts and precious moments that I never wanted to forget.

I continued this hobby for the birth of my next two children until my youngest was about 4 and I discovered my passion for home decor!

But for several years, I loved scrapbooking. It was my creative outlet, and I was really good at it!

I saved the pockets from my baby's first pair of jeans and attached it to a page with a hand printed note. I sewed decorative stitches along scrapbook papers and included unusual items like a balloon (read this story about my miscarriage), flowers, ribbons, brads and old credit cards.

I joined Ebay and sold whatever I could (usually clothes and shoes my babies had outgrown) to make money to support my hobby and so I could buy more scrapbook paper!

At the time, those pretty papers were a lure that drew me every time I went to the craft store, a little like pillows are today! 😍

You may not be surprised to hear that I still have enough pretty papers to stock a small store!

They come in so handy when I want to make a handmade card, or put together a pretty notebook. I've used them at Christmas, for personalized mini scrapbook gifts, and so much more!

Pretty papers

I went through my stack of papers recently, and pulled out several that are vintage inspired, covered in old world florals and patterns and letters and songs. Aren't these papers gorgeous? I almost hating cutting them up!

I love the mismatched look with all these soft patterns. It feels very shabby chic!

I made a quick cardboard stencil, traced it and cut out hearts from the papers for a simple garland that adds a big pop of beauty and color to my fireplace.

Does it work for Valentines? 100% YES! But because it's not strictly Valentines, the colors will be perfect right up through Spring if I so choose.

This paper heart garland also works beautifully with all the blush decor that I'm using in my home this winter. It's all cohesive.

How did I hang the garland?

Once all the hearts were cut out, I measured the width of my fireplace, added about 12 inches and cut a long length of jute cord. I glued the jute to the backs of the hearts.

The small Command hooks that I use to hang our stockings at Christmas are still in place on the mantel, and I simply wrapped the ends of the jute to the hooks and tied the garland in place.

The lambs ear garland draped across the mantel helps to soften the harsh edge of the mantel and the color works great with the paper hearts. The hearts look like they're floating ❤

I added ironstone pitchers filled with florals, and my collection of milk glass vases repurposed as candlestick holders. The whole look feels so vintage-y and feminine, especially against my chalk painted fireplace! I love it!

It just makes me want to snuggle up and read a book, it feels so cozy!

  1. Hi Cindy,

I love the paper you used for the garland. I'm generally not a garland person except for Christmas. The paper you chose gives this a sophisticated.
