Decorating for Fall with Warm Colors
How to cozy up your living room for Fall
Our home has an open floor plan, so keeping the decor and colors consistent is important because you can see it all from every room! Our last home was very compartmentalized, and I'm thinking I really prefer a blend of the two. With everything so wide open, if one room has a mess, you see it - I've gotta be honest, that does bug me a little bit! I prefer to shut the door on a mess and walk away, LOL!I love love love these buttery yellow velvet pillow covers with their ruffled edges. The velvet is so soft. We'll get to the kitchen in a bit, but first I want to show you the Fall details I've added in our living room!
We hung these beige buffalo check curtains in the three main rooms in our home and I couldn't be happier! They are top quality for a great price, and they warm up our home so much! At first I was hesitant because we're renting (and hopefully it's only for a year or two), but we still want our home to feel warm and cozy and finished! Curtains do that! We hung them as high and as wide as we could from these rods and they are perfect. Classic, beautiful weight, lined curtains! They even have tabs at the back to slide your rod through for a pleated look, which is how I chose to hang them.
You'll see ironstone pitchers and platters, tobacco baskets, pumpkins (both real, faux and DIY), baskets, wood candleholders and these somewhat primitive farmhouse sunflowers that I made from coffee stained drop cloth and mason jar lids! And at the very top are mantel clocks that Mr DIY and I both inherited from our parents! I painted them a few years ago so they'd better match our decor.
There is no built in on the other side of the fireplace, so I added my favorite white cottage dresser because it's tall. To add more height, I topped it with a vintage dough box filled with old blue and white quilts. Nope, that's not the $80 rust colored pumpkin from Pottery Barn, it's my $12 dupe! I think it bears a striking resemblance but at a fraction of the cost! See how I made it look even more like the PB Jack O Lantern here.
I hung more tobacco baskets on the wall help to balance this side of the fireplace with the other. My new favorite chunky soft blanket in the prettiest oatmeal beige and my pom pom pumpkin pillow add a little coziness.

How to add touches of Fall to the kitchen
Adding warm and cozy touches of the season to our kitchen was easy because we started with a great neutral palette of white and gray. Those colors tend to be cool, so warming it up with rust, browns, oranges, and warm golds really made a difference in adding those cozy fall vibes!Copper couldn't be more perfect for Fall decorating, and I love this fall vignette I set using a copper kettle I found online. The blue porcelain handle and knob work so well with the other blue I have in my Fall decor!
I have an upcoming tutorial and video for those chunky primitive candles, they're a great way to upcycle inexpensive battery operated votives and candles very inexpensively! In the breakfast nook, you might recognize the white dresser I'm using as my coffee bar. It was my in-laws and years ago I painted it, added new black hardware and turned it into a cheap farmhouse TV console (which we used as such until moving into this home). All my coffee supplies are stored in the cabinet underneath my coffee machine. It's my favorite place when I wake up!
The dresser was a perfect fit in the space and provided some much needed storage too! I hung our vintage arch window above it (that we rescued from our church) and I heard angels singing, lol! Ok not really, but such a great match right? These two pieces were in completely different rooms in our last home! I hung my fall wreath swag on the window. And guess what? Mr DIY found me another awesome freebie! This long wood box was in a barn when he went to purchase some wood, and the owner let him have it! I love a good freebie! After cleaning it well, I loaded it up with the paper bag fall leaf garland I made last year and lots of pumpkins. I added some copper fairy lights which are so magical when they turn on at night!
The mug rack got decorated too! You'll see more wood, copper, ironstone and some pops of blue and white!

How to add warm fall color to a bathroom
Okay, I hear you, and normally I don't decorate my bathroom for the seasons. But here's the thing. The kids are gone, and this bathroom doesn't get used very often. It was prime real estate to tuck a few more Fall goodies that wouldn't fit elsewhere in our home! This vintage black check farmhouse shower curtain is a great base to work with because it's neutral! I love the deep ruffle at the bottom, it's so cute! I hung a vintage window and topped that with the pine crown from the primitive hutch. I'm (obviously) not using it on the hutch right now, and rather than stick it in the garage, have been finding creative ways to decorate with it! Check out how I used it to decorate for July 4th! I'll probably take it down once the shower starts getting used regularly again, so the steam doesn't damage it but for now, I am enjoy the warm wood tones it's adding to this otherwise cool-toned space!
I tucked my DIY drop cloth fall sign on a check towel. There's also a small ironstone dish with a fall scented candle and my favorite pumpkin spray (great to use as a room spray or a before-you-go spray!).
The loop yarn pumpkin I made ended up in here, haha, as did a woven basket filled with faux fall leaves. I hung another tobacco basket and a couple of my vintage inspired DIY barn quilt signs on the wall on this side.

ReplyDeleteThank you Vicki! You should see my office/craft room - thank goodness I have a door, LOL!
DeleteI can't believe how quickly you've created such a lovely, cozy look in your new home!
ReplyDeleteYour fall touches are so pretty. I especially love the copper accents, they're perfect for fall!

DeleteCindy, your home is so warm and cozy. I just love all your pops of fall muted shades mixed in with all the white. Perfect for this time of year.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you've settled in well. And I loved the empty nester life (that we had for all of 6 months) because the kitchen sink and house stayed so much cleaner! Keep on decorating and redesigning and get your house just the way you like it and I bet at least one of them comes back. Even if for only a short period. ;) I actually love it that ours are back home. It's only for a short season and God always seems to give me just what I need when I need it. Love the tour and that free box is a perfect addition! Happy decorating friend.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yes the house is cleaner, and I don't have to cook as much!! Thanks so much friend! xx
DeleteCindy, no one would know that you hadn't been in your home for years. You have done a fabulous job of getting it ready for life and the fall season. Every vignette and design choice is perfect. I know you are happy to be settled again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great compliment Carol, thank you!
DeleteCindy, I can't believe how quickly you have turn this house into a home. Your fall decor is just gorgeous and I love the dresser next to the fireplace. This is going to be a fun spot for seasonal decorating. Extra points for Mr. DIY for finding the wood box. The fall arrangement is so pretty! Love it all!

And I love the mug rack too! You've created a cozy beautiful home! Hugs to you...the next phase of life is an adjustment isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteThank you AnnMarie, yes it's definitely an adjustment! Lots of mixed feelings but enjoying getting to spend more time with Mr DIY! ;)
DeleteCindy I am so impressed at how put together your home is after just moving! It usually takes me forever to have my home look half this good! Welcome to the empty nester club! To be honest my youngest is a senior in college this year, I expect she will be back to living at home next summer:). Your home looks amazing. I love how many spaces you were able to add fall decor to. I think my favorite is your breakfast nook. You just did so much there but it's all so perfect! Thanks so much for sharing your home!

ReplyDeleteCindy, I love how you stacked your blue quilts in that rustic wooden container (dough box?). There was so much beautiful things to look at in your home. Loved your home tour!
ReplyDeleteThank you Tammy! Yes it is an antique dough box, it would have had a stand when it was used. There's a lid and it would have been used for proving bread dough! It came from Mr DIY's aunt and we've used it for all different kinds of storage!
ReplyDeleteCindy, I always love visiting your home! It is so warm and welcoming! You have your new home decorated beautifully and it flows so well. I love your PotteryBarn dupe pumpkin and can't wait to check out the tutorial! Happy Fall, my friend!
