When my youngest headed off to University this Fall, I asked her if I could
make a few changes in her bedroom. She enthusiastically said I could do
whatever I wanted, and so I took that permission and ran with it to create a
charming Christmas cottage bedroom in red and white, my favorite Christmas
color palette!
Welcome to the
Celebrate Christmas Home Tours, hosted by my friend
Leen at Sand Dollar Lane. If you hopped over here from
Cottage in the Mitten, welcome! Kim is such a sweetheart and I love seeing her seasonal decor!
We're kicking off the holiday season with a week filled with Christmas
inspiration! You'll find all the links below, here's just a peek at what
you'll find! So many great ideas and something for everybody!
In complete disclosure, I am decorating for Christmas very slooowly this year!
I normally have my trees up at the beginning of November, but I have yet to
put up one yet. In all honesty, I am tired! Physically tired. If you're new
here, we relocated ourselves from south Texas to north Mississippi this
summer. It's been months of packing, moving and unpacking and setting up home
in a temporary rental. Fall was filled with lots and lots and lots of new
projects and crafts (
you can see my Fall decor and DIYs here
to see just what I mean!).
Don't get me wrong, I am always excited to decorate for Christmas, it's just
taking me a little longer this year to really get into it.
The exception is our guest bedroom. It is decked out as much as it can be, for
such a small space lol! We've even had our first guests; Mr DIY's parents
stayed for a few days after our oldest son's wedding in October.
Today I'm excited to share some tips with you for decorating a small bedroom
for the holidays. Specifically, adding vintage cottage charm with red and
white Christmas decor.
How to add cottage Christmas charm to a small bedroom
Pick a color theme
I always love when a special piece gives me inspiration for a whole space. I
found this vintage red and white cross stitched quilt online this summer. It was
a terrific price for a piece that took someone hours and hours to make! I love
it so much and it really did inspire this whole Christmas bedroom!
We haven't purchased any new furniture for this home, as it's a rental and we
won't be here for more than a year or two. This bed was one we purchased in
Texas and it was in our son's room
(totally not his style, but the price was right!). So we're playing a
little bit of musical furniture in this home, and we paired our daughter's
mattress with this bed. I think it all looks like it was meant to be together!
Lots of pillows
Using lots of pillows is one of my gifts lol, but it really does make a vintage style room feel extra cozy, squishy and inviting! I loaded up the bed with lots of pillows, including two Euro pillows I found
at Goodwill. I washed the pillows in hot water with a little bleach because I
normally do not recommend purchasing pillows from the thrift store. However,
the price of a Euro pillow insert is expensive, so this was a great way to
save some money. The ruffled white pillow cover is from Antique Farmhouse, and the little
red velvet pillow cover
is from Piper Classics.
The bed was looking a little bit funny because we store our full size futon
mattress underneath it, and you could see the futon peeking out. I found a ruffled white bed skirt on Amazon, and it disguised that perfectly!
Add something chippy
I brought in the
DIY chippy white spindle tree
that Mr DIY and I made last year from an old chair and crib rail. It just wanted
to be in this room!
This is a small room, with limited space to hang much on the walls, so I took
advantage of that large wall space beside the bed. Mr DIY and I recently made
this vintage style wood shelf with hooks, and it was designed for this space.
I hung the
fresh cedar rosemary wreath
that I recently made as well as a red ticking stripe jumbo DIY candy cane. Be
watching for that tutorial soon! I love how this collection adds interest to
this wall.
Across from the bed is the cottage green dresser that I just painted. You can
to see how it looked before, and how I custom mixed this perfect cottage green
color. Whenever I'm working in this space, Millie gets all snuggly on the
little
faux sheepskin rug
❤
I was thrilled to find this antique ice cream wood churn in a local antiques
shop. I love the original color and it was the perfect vessel for a little
tree.
Hanging on the front of a dresser is a large chippy wood stocking that Mr DIY
cut out for me. I made 5 of these and can't wait to show you how I'm using the
rest! This is another DIY I'll be sharing this season.

To give more weight to the wall above the dresser, I propped up two white
shutters and a mirror. Above the shutters I placed the decorative top from our
primitive pine china cabinet. It's been used in several different ways in our
home (see how I used it for
Fall decorated bathroom here
and how I decorated with it for
July 4th in the kitchen here) The warmth of the wood is a great contrast to all the cool tones in this
small bedroom.
On the dresser top I added an ironstone bowl filled with red ornaments
to
this round willow riser, and one of the vintage doily sheep I recently crafted - another Christmas
DIY I will be sharing in the upcoming weeks!
We're almost finished working our way around this vintage Christmas bedroom!
I've had these
ruffled country curtains
for many years and they were ideal in this vintage cottage space.
You might recognize the little side table that I rescued from the trash in
Texas. I painted it pink and then white. You can find all my
furniture DIYs
here if you're interested!
To carry on the red and white vintage Christmas theme, I tucked a little
patchwork quilt into a basket. This little quilted throw is reversible and
only looks vintage! Send me a message if you'd like my source!
I had to add a couple of Santa mugs to the side table that is doubling as a
night stand. The drawer is filled with Christmas magazines for inspiration and
I added
this striped candy cane candle on a timer
to a milk glass vase. I love the soft glow that comes on automatically each
evening!
I love the charm in this sweet space and I confess that I've spent a couple
nights in here when Mr DIY's snores were keeping me awake! ;)
If my cottage Christmas bedroom inspired you, I'd love to hear your comments
and have you share this with a friend!
