Oh boy, today we're talking all things charming, cottage and cozy...ruffled
bedding that may convince you to stay in bed all day, a mismatched assortment
of thrifted dishes, pretty florals and more!
This bedroom has served both our daughter, and then our son before they moved
out of the house. Now that we're empty nesters, I'm so thankful that Mr DIY
has given me carte blanche to do whatever I want in this room.
What did I want?
I wanted the coziest cottage bedroom that felt a little bit like being in the
English countryside. I'll let you be the judge of whether or not I achieved
that goal.
What characterizes cottage style decorating?
- the vibe is light and airy, soft and comfortable
- furniture is often white or painted
- florals and soft colors (handmade quilts, patchwork fabrics)
- evokes a feeling of nostalgia (think grandma's house)
- emphasis on feminine pieces (think lace, ruffles, floral patterns)
- cabbage roses and heirloom flowers used in abundance
- walls are light and often covered in bead board, shiplap or board and batten
While I don't have all the above elements in our guestroom (I would swoon if the walls were bead board - that's definitely a "someday" dream!), I have tried to incorporate many cottage vibes into this modern style rental home. This room is filled with several DIYs and projects that I've written tutorials for, and I'll link to those as I mention them.
The bedding
Ruffles anyone?
The star of the room is definitely
this ruffled bedding and matching
pillow covers! I'm a sucker for anything ruffled, and the cozy waffle weave combined with

I matched the ruffled bedding with pieces that I already own for a layered
look that gives the look and feel of a boutique bed and breakfast. I mean, who
wouldn't want to sleep here?
Thrifted dishes
You might have never thought to decorate a bedroom with thrifted dishes, but
it's a beautiful and affordable way to add charm. These dishes were thrifted,
all at different times and places. I don't think I paid more than $2 for any
of them. You may have never thought to pick up the odd plate here and there,
but when you can display them in a grouping, it makes a big impact.
What makes these vintage dishes work together is their florals and colors
composed of greens and pinks. I propped the dishes up on the
white cottage shelf
that Mr DIY and I made last year,
but I wouldn't recommend that if the room was being slept in
regularly.

Because we're renting (and currently packing to move), I didn't want to add
more holes that I would need to patch. But someday I will create a headboard
wall of vintage dishes, just you wait!
I repainted over an old sign to make the new guest cottage sign but I
didn't write a tutorial for it. I simply layered chalk paint, starting with
the same green that I painted the
cottage green dresser, followed by white paint. A little distressing with a fine grit sandpaper
revealed the green layer in places. Next I used my
Silhouette machine
to create a stencil with the words, and painted it using black acrylic
paint.
The green dresser
This dresser is not vintage, but it certainly looks that way thanks to the
side panels that Mr DIY added, the fresh new paint color and vintage style

HERE. It's hard to get a good picture because this space is very tight, but I
carried the pink color and vintage dishes to the dresser top.

Think outside the box
I like adding wicker or woven pieces to a cottage space because it adds
warmth and texture. The polka dot basket of tulips is a
trash can
that I spotted in the kids department at Target. I bought it specifically to
display blooms. It's fun to think outside the box when decorating a space!
This lamp is another example of using something in a unique way. It started
life as
this side table, but I took it apart and used all three pieces in this room in different
ways...can you spot them? You can purchase wicker lampshades HERE and HERE.

Here is a better view, but it's a little blown out because of the light that
pours in this window.
