I was craving a little craft project and didn't want to spend any money. Using items I had on hand, I made several of these easy book page and cardboard sunflowers. They are rustic, have that awesome fall texture and would be so easy to customize with paint if you want more color!

Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year! I love the cooler, crisp days, warm colors and the cozy feel of all things Fall! If you love Fall too, don't miss my past Fall DIYs and decor ideas.

Steps to make book page sunflowers

I'll share some pictures here and then describe what I did below. If any part of this is confusing to you, please visit the video tutorial where you can watch the steps in action.

Make flower center

I cut a long strip of cardboard from a box and then rolled it up tightly and used hot glue to secure it. This will become the center of the book page sunflower. I love the texture of the cardboard, and it's great to recycle all the pieces for these DIY flowers! I give specifics on size in the video.

Cut book pages

I carefully tore out several pages from a thrifted book, folded and cut each page into 4 pieces. I believe I used 14 pieces for each sunflower.

Make petals

Squish one end of a page, crumple the entire thing, then add a drop of glue and press it to the edge of the cardboard sunflower center we made. Continue in this manner, overlapping the petals so the sunflower is full.

Make stem

I recycled the brown paper that comes in my Amazon boxes, twisting a piece to form a stem, and wrapping it tightly with some brown wire to hold it in place. I created a bit of a spoon shape on one end, gluing the paper to hold it in place. This piece is hot glued to the back of the sunflower.

This stem is sturdy enough to hold the sunflowers upright while in a vase and even when you're holding them.

If you like, you can lightly spray, stain or paint the petals with coffee stain or acrylic paints to create colorful flowers!

I would love to hear from you if you love these or decide to make your own!

I added them to  this hanging wicker basket and a painted fishing creel basket in my studio for now.

If you love neutral Fall decorating, these rustic sunflowers made from book pages, cardboard and brown paper, will be a beautiful (and free!) addition to your home.
