Chunky Primitive Tattered DIY Sunflowers
Create primitive style tattered fabric sunflowers with chunky centers. Add a touch of homespun charm to your Fall decor this season!
This is the season for sunflowers! Some day, I will grow my own, but for now I
am making the cutest tattered fabric sunflowers. These are a breeze to make
and you will love the styling options!
How to make chunky primitive tattered sunflowers

Supplies needed
- cotton fabric (I recommend homespun, but any cotton fabric will do)
- needle and thread
- polyester fiberfill stuffing
- round object to trace (I used a lunch plate and saucer that measured 8" and 5")
- fabric scissors (I use these scissors)
- imagination
Things to keep in mind:
- each sunflower takes 3 circles (2-8" circles and 1 smaller circle for the middle)
- use a darker fabric for the flower center
- match thread to dark fabric
- you will need to know how to thread a needle and do a simple running stitch

Start by stacking the circles for one sunflower (right sides up) and pinning
the circles together with a straight pin.
The steps are described below.
Step One
Using a wide, primitive style running stitch, hand stitch the center circle
almost all the way around but leave a spot for stuffing.
Step Two
Firmly stuff the center, adding polyfill until you have a nice and evenly
chunky center. Pin the opening closed and finish stitching, tying off thread
at the back.
Step Three
Snip the outside circles in towards the inner circle, creating petals that
are about 1" wide.
Make as many sunflowers as you want, repeating the steps above. They should
all look like this at this point.
Step Four
This is the "magic" step that turns these sunflowers into perfectly tattered,
primitive fall beauties! Stick the sunflowers in the washer and dryer!
Tips:
- use a mesh lingerie bag to control threads
- don't wash sunflowers with towels, but add something else to balance the load (t-shirts and jeans are perfect choices)
Once the sunflowers come out of the dryer, the snipped edges will be perfectly tattered! You may have to remove a few loose threads, but have fun using these cute flowers in your fall vignettes!
Ideas for styling primitive sunflowers
- add to dough bowls, tiered trays and other vessels as fall filler
- insert a stick or wood skewer through a couple stitches in the stuffed center and add to pitchers
- use as decorative elements on a fall table
- create a garland by pinning sunflowers to a length of ribbon or cording
I hung a vertical garland on my black painted hutch and used
rusty mini safety pins
to hold the sunflowers to a piece of ribbon that I hung on a nail.
