How to Make Chunky Tattered Candy Canes
First of all, I have an entire video tutorial for these cuties, which you can
watch on my YouTube channel
HERE!
These tattered candy canes are wrapped in red ticking stripe fabric, with the
sweetest charming tattered edges. There are a few tricks for getting them to

Supplies
- plastic candy canes (I purchased THIS 30-pc set)
- cotton batting (use any leftovers to make these adorable mitten ornaments!)
- red ticking stripe fabric
- scissors ( THESE are my favorite fabric scissors! And they are less than $10)
- hot glue
- optional - cinnamon (for a primitive look)
Step 1: cut or tear fabric strips
You will need to cut your batting into strips. For the ticking stripe, I tear
it, which is how you get those perfectly tattered edges with ease!
Step 2: chunk them up!
The not so "secret" secret to getting really chunky candy canes is to first
wrap them in the strips of cotton batting. Do not try to get away with
polyester batting, it will not give you the same results! You will glue them
at the beginning and the end. The batting gets stretched as you wrap, and it
will twist a little bit. That's exactly what you want!

Step 3: wrap in ticking
You can really use any thick, sturdy cotton fabric that you want. I personally
LOVE red ticking for Christmas, it has such a homespun, nostalgic look. Wrap
and glue the strips around the candy canes.
Step 4: rub with cinnamon (optional)
Here is how your chunky candy canes will look after they've been wrapped in
fabric. This one has been rubbed with cinnamon to give it a grungy, primitive
look.
I love them both. These sweet candy canes are so perfect to hang on the tree,
or tuck into your Santa mugs or wherever you like.
If you have little cubbies, they are so sweet tucked inside with a few bottle
brush trees.
Here's another look at the progression as we transform these commercial candy
canes into charming chunky and tattered Christmas decor.
