I love the charm of vintage Christmas but getting the "real thing" can cost a pretty penny! That's why I love coming up with ways to fake the look of a vintage Christmas. Hey, I'm on a budget and Christmas needs to be affordable! Come with me as I show you this fun idea, easy enough for kids to make!
Supplies
- silver chenille stems (pipe cleaners)
- wood spools (mine are vintage but new ones will work too)
- wire snips
- printed Christmas sheet music (I love this free one from The Graphics Fairy)
- double sided tape or glue
- scissors
These little tinsel trees are really easy to make, but a little hard to
describe lol! I'm in the process of putting a short video reel together and
when I do, I'll add it to this post.

stumps you!
I was fortunate to inherit my mom's wood spools, as well as the sewing items
from another family member. I have two large jars of wood spools, and I
thought it was high time I use them for a craft! You can purchase large wood
spools at the craft store, and if you want to add a vintage vibe to the edges,
simply swipe them with a little
dark wax,
antique glaze
or even watered down
brown craft paint!
Please read the full description below for creating these tinsel trees
Step 1
Each tree will use 5 chenille stems. Set 1 aside, and arrange 4 of them so one
stem is slightly higher than the others.
Step 2
Bend the other 3 stems away from the center, and then tightly twist the four
stems together below that point. Continue twisting for 5-6" or until your tree
seems like a good length. This will be the trunk of the tree.
Step 3
Use wire snips to cut the excess stems off. Don't discard, we will be using
these to create the branches of the tree.
Step 4
Ensure that your tree "trunk" will fit into the hole in the wood spool. You
may need to twist it a little tighter. Do this before moving on.
Step 5
Lay out the pieces of stem that were snipped off in step 3. We want to have
graduated pairs of 3 for a total of 6 pieces. You may need to cut down another
chenille stem (this is where the 5th stem comes in).
Step 6
Take the longest pair and twist them around the tree trunk and each other at
the base of the tree. This will be our longest branch.
Step 7
Twist the chenille stems together to form a single branch on either side of
the tree trunk. In the picture above, in Step 7, you'll see the right hand
sides have been twisted together but the left haven't yet. Continue in this
manner for the other pairs of branch pieces, spacing them out along the tree
trunk.
Step 8, 9
Print out the sheet music and cut a piece to fit around the body of the wood
spool, essentially giving it a collar. Use double stick tape to adhere.
I created a small banner with the printed sheet music title, notched the ends
with scissors and glued it to the tree branches. The tree trunk can be simply
stuck into the wood spool or you can choose to glue it to make it permanent.
Aren't these the cutest little tinsel trees? Tuck them into your villages or
shelves or anywhere you need a sweet little Christmas touch!
