After the splurge of the holidays, wallets can be a little tight and it's a great time to find clever ways to save money. Check out these Christmas decorations that can be repurposed as Valentines decor...you might be surprised!

Idea #1 - Christmas trees

More and more people are leaving their Christmas trees up longer into the New Year. And why not? Those twinkle lights and cheerful decorations help to banish the winter woes!

A couple years ago I switched out most of my Christmas decor for budget-friendly Valentines day decor and decorated a whole tree using handmade items that were a cinch to make! You can read that post HERE.

This year, I left out several small tabletop trees, including all of my ivory bottle brush trees. I love how they looked as a collection on the top of my vintage dresser in the living room. Their common color gives them greater impact, and it looks like a winter wonderland forest! You can see how I made the ivory velvet ribbon loop tree HERE.

My trees all have vintage vibes, and that's on purpose, but you could do this with any trees that you already own!

My collection of ivory bottle brush trees were again massed together, this time on the Amish pie safe in my kitchen. In a few days I'll be sharing how you can create vintage inspired Valentines Day trees using bottle brush trees!

I added more Christmas trees to my wall cubby of ironstone smalls, again in creamy whites and neutrals. A little pink bow on the dollar store tree gives it some sweet Valentines Day charm!

I left out a tabletop Christmas tree in a basket, and simply switched out the ornaments for the prettiest shabby chic hearts made from a dollar store wall tile, more pink ribbon and the pink chenille hearts I made last year.

Idea #2 - ornaments

You've already seen some images above with pink ornaments. I went through all my Christmas and pulled out the pink ones and some gold ones. In the kitchen, I filled a clear  glass apothecary jar with all my mini pink ornaments.

In my dining room pine hutch, pink mercury glass ornaments (that I bought on clearance after Christmas years ago) were added to a stack of creamy white vintage ironstone bowls. My DIY pink and gold shatterproof ornaments were added to another bowl. It's a subtle nod to Valentines here, but it suits my style! You could just as easily do this with red ornaments or a combination of red and pink!

Idea #3 - garland

Once you become aware of the fact that a lot of Christmas decor can be reused for other seasons, you'll start buying smarter! Wool ball garlands, snowflake garlands, greenery and even beaded garland can also be repurposed in your home decor during the winter months.

I made an inexpensive garland for Christmas using Target Dollar Spot ornaments that I tied onto a piece of jute. Mini stockings (made from a dollar store wall tile) were hung in between the ornaments. You can see how it looked HERE.

For Valentines Day decor, I simply removed the stockings (they were clipped on with mini clothespins) and replaced them with the super easy pink button hearts I made last year. I repurposed a beaded pearl garland that I bought years ago from the Christmas section and just draped that over the first.

I love how the beaded garland adds a little bit of elegance, and matches all the creamy white trees below.

Here's another idea using greenery. I wrapped a length of greenery around my wall mounted iron mug rack, in the shape of a heart. This isn't even Christmas garland, but you could certainly use any garland you have! Click HERE to see how I used large wood candy canes as a hanging heart wreath.

Idea #4 - textiles

Anything red and white or pink and white can work! Think quilts, throws, tablecloths and napkins, runners and pillows! When you purchase new items, think about buying things that can be reused for another season.

My red and white Christmas quilt is really just a winter forest scene, so I folded it and put it at the end of my bed, along with the vintage red and white cross stitch quilt that I bought a few years ago. The red adds a wonderful pop of color to my white linens.

Just a touch of Valentines with a pillow and a heart shaped DIY wreath made with paper roses continues the Valentines Day theme.

Here's another example of using Christmas textiles to decorate for Valentines Day. I love ticking and couldn't resist these ruffled ticking stripe dish cloths that Hobby Lobby was selling over Christmas. I purchased them as napkins, along with the matching apron.

But how cute are they for a Valentines Day table? I tied it with some red velvet ribbon and added one of the farmhouse wood hearts I made years ago, see that tutorial HERE. The scalloped wood heart charger from Hobby Lobby is perfect here.

I folded up the rest of my red, white and pink quilts and stacked them on the built ins in our living room, making sure the pink and red sides are facing out.

I've probably just scratched the surface here! Other Christmas items that can be repurposed for Valentines decor are:
  • red berries (fill a bowl or make a heart shaped wreath)
  • some Christmas cards
  • red books
  • dishes
  • ribbon, buttons, bows, etc
  • white or red stockings (fill them with Valentines picks)
