Favorite budget decor ideas for Valentines Day

Here are some ways to add Valentines decor without breaking the bank (or in some cases, without even opening your wallet or leaving home!) You'll notice that most of these ideas feature hearts, but you'll find some other nuggets here as well!

Idea #1: heart garland

Making a heart garland is as simple as cutting out fabric hearts and gluing or clipping them to a length or cord or ribbon.

I used some leftover chenille bedspread fabric to make this sweet heart garland. Here's how to do it:
  1. fold a small piece of fabric in half
  2. cut out half a heart
  3. glue or clip (I love these mini clothespins) hearts to inexpensive twine

Insider tips: Your hearts will hang better if they're cut out of thick material, such as quilted pieces, chenille or sturdy canvas. You can purchase cutter quilt pieces on Etsy.

If you want something a little more challenging, try making my mini button hearts. They can easily be strung from an existing garland like I've done here. Read more about repurposing Christmas items for Valentines day.

Idea #2: heart wreath

I have two favorite heart shaped DIY wreaths, and they're both made from thrifty materials. My paper bag roses Valentines wreath is literally made from paper lunch sacks, and an Amazon shipping box! It doesn't get any cheaper.

My shabby tattered heart wreath takes more time to make, but isn't complicated. I used an old sheet and piece of lace to make this fabric scrap wreath.

Both of these wreaths are neutral and really can be left out all year.

Idea #3: embroidered hearts

If you took Home Ec in high school, you likely learned a few basic embroidery stitches. And even if you didn't, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials to demonstrate each one.

I made these hearts over the course of a couple evenings. The supplies were very inexpensive...felt, buttons and DMC floss (also known as cross stitch thread). I made several different varieties, which I'll be sharing over the next weeks.

Idea #4: embossed hearts

One or two pieces of embossed wall tile from Dollar Tree can yield you several heart shaped ornaments. You probably already have white chalk paint and gold rub n buff in your stash. These hearts are fast to make and look so pretty and vintage. You can find the complete tutorial here.

Idea #5: pink yarn coasters

All you need to make a set of coasters is a roll of yarn (I recommend a chunky one) and felt sheets. These go quick with the help of your hot glue gun. You'll find the step by step tutorial for these DIY coasters here.

Idea #6: frosted and crystallized hearts

Your kids or grandkids will love to help you with this science experiment! Inexpensive chenille stems are bent into hearts, and soaked in a solution of Borax and water. Want more information on making them? Check out this tutorial with video!

Idea #7: Valentines Day table

Your family will love to wake up to a sweetly decorated Valentines Day table! I've got lots of ideas in this post, including stamped heart utensil holders, yummy heart shaped scones and easy salt dough clay hearts that can be made with pantry staples!

Maybe the easiest tip I can share with you is to SHOP your home! You'll be surprised at all the items you already own that can be pulled together to create Valentines decor. Anything pink or red is up for grabs, but don't forget about your white pieces too! You can use a red sharpie to draw hearts on glazed mugs or pitchers (test on the bottom first to be sure it washes off) or simply cut hearts from red card stock!
