How to make a paper bag roses heart shaped wreath for Valentines Day

Steps to make heart shaped wreath with paper bag rosettes
Here's a summary of the steps needed to make this wreath. We'll create and cut a template for our wreath base, cut the base out of cardboard, create the paper roses, then attach them to the wreath form. I'll break these steps down below in more detail below, along with a video of how I made the roses.
Step 1 - Make cardboard heart-shaped wreath base
I used a piece of freezer paper to create my heart template. It's larger than a regular piece of paper, and I was able to cut my heart out in one piece.
To make the heart, fold the paper in half along the longer edge. Draw half a heart, starting at the folded edge and ending at the fold. Cut out and when open, you'll have a heart with matching sides. For reference, my heart measures just over 12".
You could also trace something heart-shaped but I like being able to customize the size and shape.
You now need to cut out a smaller heart from the paper heart. This creates an open form for the base of our wreath. I made mine about 2" wide, but did go back and trim this down to about 1" so the form doesn't show between the roses.
Open up the paper heart frame you've made, and trace it onto the cardboard. To cut it out, I had the most success with an Xacto knife (not shown). You could use scissors, but it's difficult to cut such a large curved shape without bending the cardboard.
Step 2 - Make paper bag roses
My wreath form is about 12" tall and wide. For this size of wreath, I needed 12 paper bag roses. This gives a nice, full wreath without space between the roses.
The roses are formed by pinching the bottom of the paper bag with one hand, inserting the other hand into the bag and twisting (from the inside).
Video tutorial
As you continue to twist while holding that center piece, the rose petals are formed. Sounds confusing? This short video will help you to see exactly how to make the roses.
Designer tips:
- each rose will be unique, embrace it!
- if you're not happy with a rose, start over; the paper gets softer once crumpled, and is easier to work with that way
- pinching that center section before twisting helps to create the inside of the rose
Step 3 - Glue roses to wreath form
As you saw in the video, I used a little hot glue to secure the bottom of the paper roses to help it hold its shape.
Before you glue the roses to the heart form, I recommending doing a "dry fit" so you have an idea of how your roses will fit. You may have to make a couple more, and like me, you may have to squish them a little bit tighter on the side to really fill in the wreath.
I prefer a fuller looking wreath, you make yours how you like it best!
I used a generous glob of hot glue to attach a paper rose at the top and bottom of the wreath. This way, I will have an even number of roses on each side.
Be sure to press and hold each paper rose after gluing it to the wreath form to give the hot glue time to set up.
Don't be afraid to press the roses down, it won't hurt them! In fact, as the demonstration video shows, crinkling and crumpling the paper softens it a little and makes the roses easier to form.
Hang the wreath
This is an extremely lightweight wreath. To make hanging it easier, I hot glued a long piece of ribbon to the back, tied a bow and hung the wreath from the loop.
The hardest part of this DIY paper roses heart wreath will be deciding where to hang it! It's such a unique wreath and looks good everywhere, you may need to make a few.
I started by hanging the heart wreath over the bed in our Valentines bedroom.
But then I had to move it to the white cottage dresser in our living room where I would see it more often, and I think this is where it will stay. I am really enjoying the neutral Valentines vibes here, with my winter white trees and just that pop of pink.
Because this wreath is so lightweight, it's perfect for peg rails, cupboard doors, and anywhere a heavier wreath would not work.
