Do I have to use fabric?
Nope. You can use napkins, tissue paper, even a printable! Once you find the
image you love, pretty much anything goes. My jar lids got a vintage cottage
update with a beautiful cabbage roses fabric that I found but you can use
anything that you can brush with Mod Podge.
What if I don't like pink?
My ideas are to inspire you, and then you make it your own! Make your jar lids
any color and style that you'd like.
Where did you find this fabric
I'll share the link to the exact fabric I used, as well as a few other similar
ideas in the supplies list below.
I promise this is an easy craft that should take you about 30 minutes to complete, and I'll be walking you through the steps from beginning to end. So what are we waiting for? Let's get started.
Supplies
- glass jars with lids (or just the lids - zinc or aluminum)
- acrylic paint - I used this pink and this white
- instant coffee granules
- dark furniture paste wax (this is optional but great for adding a vintage look)
- fabric with a small design that can be cut out (I used this fabric) Similar HERE.
- OR paper napkins with vintage roses designs like these pink ones, these blue ones, these multicolored ones
- matte Mod Podge
- craft brush
- optional: clear paste wax to seal or a spray sealer, sandpaper
You might be looking at the supplies and wondering, 'why coffee'? It's
a little trick I learned when the color of your paint isn't quite right. By
adding a little instant coffee crystals to the paint, it deepens the color
slightly, adding more depth.
Hot tip: Coffee is an inexpensive and easy way to add vintage color to regular acrylic paints!
You'll be able to see what I mean in the steps illustrated below. By mixing
about 1/2 tsp of instant coffee with my acrylic paint, and allowing it to melt
into the paint by mixing, the color is deepened and more like the vintage pink
I was wanting.
Note in step 6 above that I dabbed on some dark wax to the jar lids to further
age them.
You'll want to cut out flowers from your fabric or napkins. Be sure they are
the right fit for the jar lids. You can play around with multiple pieces to
more fully cover the lid and get the cottage look you're wanting.
Once you're happy with the pieces you've cut out, use a foam brush to dab mod
podge to the backsides of the fabric and place them on the lids. Follow this
with a coat of mod podge on the tops of the flowers and entire lid. I found
pouncing the foam brush to distribute the decoupage medium, then lightly
brushing it to smooth was the most effective.
After the mod podge has fully dried, you can seal the design by doing one of
the following:
- rub on some clear wax, allow to set and then buff gently
- spray with an acrylic sealer
- give the lids another coat of mod podge
I know you will enjoy adding shabby chic cottage style to your home with these
cabbage roses decoupaged jars. The lids alone look beautiful paired with
creamy white ironstone.
I am really loving these vintage pink cabbage rose jar lids against the
buttery yellows that I used in my
kitchen this Spring!
I filled my jars with some dried roses and
pink speckled eggs.
I imagine a row of these decorated jars in a butler's pantry, filled with dry
goods. Ahhh, so charming!
Have fun with this easy craft, repurposing and upcycling the humble mason jar
lid!
